1 2 3 4 1 of 4 Digital images Graphics on a screen are made up of tiny blocks called pixels. The more pixels on the screen, the higher the resolution and the better the quality of the picture will be. The higher the image resolution, the more memory is needed to store the graphic. Image files can be either bitmaps or vectors. Bitmaps Bitmap images are widely used on digital cameras, smartphones and online. Common bitmap image file types include JPEG, GIF and PNG. Bitmaps are also known as pixelmaps or raster graphics. Bitmap images are organised as a grid of coloured squares called pixels (short for 'picture elements'). When zooming in or enlarging a bitmap image, the pixels are stretched and made into larger blocks. This is why bitmap images appear as poor quality when enlarged too much. It is more efficient than bitmaps at storing large areas of the same colour because it does not need to store every pixel as a bitmap does. Vector graphics can be scaled without losing resolution. They can be enlarged or reduced in size - but the file size will stay almost exactly the same. One of the most common vector file formats is scalable vector graphics (SVG). SVG is an open standard for vector graphics. It is possible to edit SVG images using numbers to change the size and colour variables in HTML. This is often used for graphs and infographics in HTML5. HTML5 5th generation of HTML. infographic A graphical image which contains, or is generated from, data and statistics. JPEG Joint Photographic Experts Group - a digital image format which uses lossy compression. lossless A form of compression that encodes digital files without losing detail. Files can also be restored to their uncompressed quality. lossy A form of compression that reduces digital file sizes by removing data. memory The part of a computer that stores data. metadata Data about data. It is a set of data that describes and gives information about other data. Some metadata is stored within the head section of webpages and contains keyword and author data. open standard A publicly agreed method of using and sharing different types of information, particularly over the internet. pixel One of the individual units (often called dots) that make up an image. PNG Portable network graphics - a digital image format that uses lossless compression. resolution The fineness of detail that can be seen in an image - the higher the resolution of an image, the more detail it holds. It is measured in dots per inch (dpi). smartphone A mobile phone with a powerful processor that is capable of running applications and accessing the internet. vector An image stored as mathematical instructions for how to draw it. This means its width and height can be increased without the loss of quality.

In collaboration with UNESCO, engineering specialists at Oxford University, our other academic partners, and the government of the United Arab Emirates, we are in the process of capturing millions of 3D images of threatened objects. Armed with lightweight, discreet and easy-to-use 3D cameras, our dedicated volunteer photographers are capturing high quality scans at important sites in conflict zones throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Approximately 5,000 of these low-cost, high-tech cameras will be distributed by early 2016. Images from these devices are uploaded through our web portal for inclusion in the open-source Million Image Database. The images will be used for research, heritage appreciation, educational programs and 3D replication – including full-scale 3D replication using proprietary cement-based 3D printing techniques. The first full-scale replication will occur in April, 2016 with further replications scheduled throughout 2016 and 2017. This program is the first of its kind in both purpose and scale. However, it is our hope that it will become a model for future similar endeavors. Ashmolean Latin Inscriptions ProjectLatin inscriptions often seem inaccessible and incomprehensible to the general public. This project aims to create an online corpus and critical edition of the museum's collection of inscriptions for a scholarly readership, and then to use this as a springboard for further online resources and interactive activities, and to incorporate more Latin inscriptions into the museum's displays in order to open up this type of first-hand source material to as wide an audience as possible. It will show Latin inscriptions can illuminate the society, economy, and religion of the Roman world.
